La chose la plus difficile à accepter lors d’un confinement c’est peut-être l’éventualité même que celui-ci nous touche. Qu’insidieusement il dépose sa souche infectieuse à l’intérieur de nos êtres sans qu’aucun test ou vaccin ne puisse rien n’y faire. Autant dire qu’il n’y a pas de masque pour s’en protéger ou protéger les autres non plus. Certains de ses locataires avaient un semblant de vie sociale en squattant notamment les terrasses de cafés avec nous. On prend des nouvelles, on fume des clopes ensemble. Maintenant ils errent sans but tout autour du pâté de maison de leur centre social à fumer des clopes mais cette fois-ci chèrement taxées. Répétitif et sans surprises. Comment chacun peut perdre peu à peu pied, sans le voir venir. Toujours sûr et confiant que l’on ne rentrera pas dans les statistiques, que les articles de journaux dénotant la situation psychologique dramatique du pays ne nous concernent pas. Qui l’on est vraiment. Après tout, me suis-je jamais posé en dehors du tourbillon de la vie pour connaître vraiment mes besoins, mes envies ? Vais-je mourir un jour sans découvrir l’essence même de ce qui m’anime, ce qui me fait me réveiller tous les jours pour prolonger l’acte de vie. That it insidiously infuses its infectious strain inside our beings without any test or vaccine being able to do anything about it. There is no mask to protect ourselves or others from it. The only mask to be wary of is the one that makes you feel like shit at home alone after 7pm. There is a shelter for mentally vulnerable people next door to me. Some of its tenants had a semblance of a social life by squatting on café terraces with us sometimes. We check up on them, smoke cigarettes together. Now they wander aimlessly around the block of their social centre smoking borrowed fags. They don't drink the free half pints of beer they used to get, but cans, alone, not far from their shelter. Life has become a block of houses. Repetitive and without surprises. The routine that used to be bearable with a normal professional and social life is gradually becoming a torture. This is what I tried to show with this series. How everyone can lose ground little by little, without seeing it coming. Always sure and confident that we out of the statistics, that the newspaper articles denoting the dramatic psychological situation of the country don't concern us. How a lethargic state suddenly infuses everything and brings out the least sympathetic out of us. Unfortunately, there is no bottom to this routine on which to place the solid step of renewal. The only solution seems to be pure self-love, the search for an unexpected energy deep inside. The hope of change, but not necessarily the one we usually believe exists outside of us, but rather the one we have lost contact with, inside. One of the avenues to explore would be to learn more about ourselves. Who we really are. After all, have I ever stood outside the whirlwind of life to really know my needs and desires? Will I die one day without discovering the very essence of what drives me, what makes me wake up every day to prolong the act of living. The one that was placed in me at birth, forgetting to provide me with the user's manual. There is everything to discover, everything to explore, except that this time the adventure is within us. Ils furent même, à un certain point, l’unique raison qui me poussait alors à sortir et constater l’échec d’incompatibilité. Ils ont été néanmoins comme des signes de vie, en l’absence de sa présence normalement attendue. La réalité de cette période ayant été bien trop brusque et imposante pour être digérée d’un seul tenant, il aura fallu la découper en plus petits morceaux. Des petites parts plus comestibles, rendant ainsi l’expérience quotidienne tolérable pour l’esprit. Ceci est une sélection aléatoire amenée à evoluer avec le temps. ____ Signes de vie This collection of photographs is meant to be the sum of the mental chapels, refuges, visions, untouched caves and sanctuaries, all the totemic places and byways, the clearings that appeared and the lifeboats that helped me overcome the harshness of Parisian life, until its final point in January 2020, when I was released. They were even, at some point, the only reason to go out and witness the failure of incompatibility. They acted as signs of life, in the absence of its ordinarily expected presence. The reality of this period having been too abrupt and imposing to be digested in one piece, it had to be cut into smaller pieces. Smaller, more edible parts, making the daily experience acceptable. Even if the final result looks more like a noisy motorway that one would join at full speed and which would only be left by forcibly releasing the last object to which we were firmly attached to, these images - be they hopeful or on the contrary horrendous - all helped me to organise this chaos, to make it in fine almost immobile. Signes de Vie is the fortuitous manifestation of all the sensations that are still possible to save, in reaction, and against all those that have never been. The complete series consists of 173 images collected in a booklet. This is a random selection that will evolve over time. La série de photographies met à nu le sentiment de liberté que chacun peut trouver tapis au fond de soi. Celui qui, lorsque le moment est venu de retourner dans un endroit chargé de ces souvenirs qui marquent à jamais un esprit encore jeune, fait tout ressurgir par le fond. Le temps participant à l’effacement de la mémoire, il ne reste alors plus que du vide. The images that compose this series of photographs were all shot during- several comings and goings on the shores of the Côte d’Opale in the Pas- de-Calais region of France. They mainly depict the southern part of this region through the towns of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, Stella Plage, Mérli- mont, Rang-du-Fliers, Berck and Étaples-sur-Mer, as well as various other places around. It was the reunion with this area, after ten years without having set foot there, that triggered the process of creating this book. The series of photographs aims at laying bare the sense of freedom that everyone can find lurking deep inside. That precise feeling which, when the time comes to return to a place full of those moments that forever mark a younger spirit, brings everything back to life from the bottom up. Time erases memory, leaving nothing but emptiness. A shallow abyss that would not make you dizzy. It is a liberation without revolt and without glory. A liberation that forms slowly in an almost imperceptible mutation, throughout these lonely wanderings. There is an aftertaste of the Wild West conquest in reappre- hending this mental space that has become virgin again with time. The series began a few years ago, originally under the title Nostalgia In Situ, picking up the thread of this past life left where it had suddenly changed direction. The whole process - even if it was not conscious at the beginning - was immediately imbued with adolescent nostalgia, and without knowing how to articulate it at first, became clearer as its purpose be- came apparent : How to show something that no longer exists? In the end, the most important is to press the button when you feel a pre- sence, since you cannot contemplate it clearly. It only exists for oneself and within oneself like the barely visible traces of the most perfectly adapted camouflage of an animal. It is the instinct that speaks and it is stronger than anything else, sometimes it is off topic and from time to time it is right. It is up to the author to judge the veracity. Les Alpilles, Baux-de-Provence&nbsp;— novembre 2017. Chaque année, quand on le peut, on va aider le père de David à récolter les olives. C’est l’occasion pour certains d’entre nous de se retrouver dans la nature avec l’idée de pouvoir lier l’effort physique à des discussions parfois hautement métaphysiques. Quelque part dans les Baux-de-Provence une petite troupe d’amis brave ainsi le mistral et la pluie chaque mois de novembre, avec en tête, la douce récompense de pouvoir s’endormir épuisé vers 22h après avoir dégusté un morceau de porc grillé et bu quelques verres de vin. Cette année là ce fut un peu différent. Déjà parce que nous étions seulement deux, et puis, David me parlait depuis longtemps déjà de l’ancienne exploitation rizicole que son père gérait en dehors d’Arles quand il était petit. C’était un gigantesque domaine fait d’entrepôts, de mas aux styles variés et de champs à perte de vue, dans lequel l’enfant qu’il était alors pouvait s’épanouir en famille, libre et insouciant. C’était le Mas de la Ville. Il avait toujours l’oeil brillant à l’évocation de toutes ces histoires anciennes mais n’avait jamais osé y retourner. Sûrement la crainte de revoir ce fantôme et de ne pas le reconnaitre. Il faut dire que certaines séparations sont plus marquantes que d’autres. C’est alors que je lui ai demandé de m’y emmener. Une courte série de photographies et deux textes sont issues de ce séjour. Le premier tente de lier le geste à l’histoire, l’homme à la nature, bref de comprendre l’ordre des choses dans ce petit morceau de Provence. Le passé s’effrite, c’est indubitable. Certes, il se décompose lentement dans nos mémoires, mais la nostalgie est là pour garder les meilleurs morceaux aussi intacts que possible. Elle les maintient en vie coûte que coûte, et malgré la rouille et l’abandon, le mythe perdure. Certains endroits semblent tout particulièrement comme touchés par le mauvais oeil, et il faudrait peut-être parfois mieux les laisser pour morts. Ils portent en eux le regret, le symbole de la fin d’une époque resplendissante, la sensation que les choses n’auront plus jamais la même saveur. Quand on se trouve à pouvoir partager les souvenirs d’autres personnes que soi-même, ceux émanants de gens que l’on croyait déjà bien connaître, c’est alors une chance de mieux comprendre le rapport si particulier qu’entretient chacun d’eux avec le temps qui passe. Une légende se forme, qui ressemble finalement beaucoup à celle que nous possédons tous, il n’y a plus qu’à s’en saisir. Toujours présentes en arrière plan, les Alpilles ne dépérissent pas, elles, ou du moins si lentement que c’en est imperceptible. Les premiers Hommes les ont probablement vu telles que nous les voyons aujourd’hui, stoïques comme une divinité immortelle. Elles ramènent inlassablement à elles tous ceux qui s’éloignent trop loin de la terre, comme le chien de berger aboyant aux moutons. Elles sont le phare de tous les esprits égarés épris de nostalgie aiguë. À taille presque humaine se trouvent les oliviers, petits soldats du grand rocher, qui soudent les hommes au rythme des récoltes et des saisons. Dans ce grand cercle vertueux les souvenirs du passé n’ont alors plus leur place, le présent reprend le dessus dans l’urgence de se reconnecter à la terre. On dénote souvent cette fâcheuse habitude chez certaines personnes d’âge mûr, qui consiste à employer abusivement de grandes phrases toutes faites sur la vie. Le peu de vie restante dorénavant observée à travers le télescope plaqué or de l’expérience, tout en haut de la tour sacrée de la sagesse. Comme si cette équation propre à chacun pouvait bien résoudre à elle seule tous nos maux existentiels de jeunes êtres immatures. L’expérience de tous devenant boule de sagesse molle qu’il faudrait suivre à la lettre comme l’unique règle du jeu de la vie. Il est dans l’action Frédo et c’est d’ailleurs son meilleur mode d’expression. Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas qu’il ne lui serait jamais rien arrivé d’exceptionnel, bien au contraire, mais c’est que l’on peut tout aussi bien partager ses propres expériences sans nécessairement devoir les emballer dans une Tapisserie de Bayeux tricotée à sa propre gloire. Ainsi, du haut de sa caravane, quelque part dans les Baux-de-Provence, Frédo contemple l’absurdité de nos vies hyper-urbaines, enfermées dans le tourbillon de la consommation à outrance et du plaisir immédiat, dont le seul carburant provient de métiers pour lesquels un quelconque savoir-faire manuel n’a presque plus de place. Tendre des filets de 10 mètres sous les arbres pour ensuite en peigner les branches pendant des heures, relève non seulement de la prouesse physique voire du châtiment corporel, mais aussi d’une forme de voyage introspectif. La chose est souvent inattendue pour certains, l’activité provoque en effet un état méditatif chez le récoltant, qui laisse alors son esprit déambuler librement au rythme des olives tombant sur le cuir de ses propres chaussures. Aimer se retrouver isolé quelque part au creux des Alpilles, avec pour seuls compagnons un tracteur antédiluvien et un 4x4 tuberculeux. Mais il semblerait cependant que ces oliviers aient quelque chose qui force l’attachement, le même que celui que l’on éprouve pour un animal de compagnie, auquel on se prend parfois à parler sans attendre de réponse nécessairement audible pour les oreilles. Ici c’est le mistral qui nous parle à travers eux, soufflant entre leurs solides branches le doux bruissement de l’ataraxie. Enfin, chaque geste employé peint un grand tout qui exprime avec bienveillance le peu de choses finalement nécessaires à l’accomplissement de soi. Il ne s’agit pas uniquement de la récolte, mais aussi de tout ce qui y est lié : le repas, la route, le groupe, la transmission, le sommeil... Les choses se mettent alors toutes seules en ordre de marche avec aisance, comme le cours d’une rivière qui coulerait depuis des siècles. Elle retranscrit le sentiment étrange qui parfois me prend, celui d’avoir la sensation de ne pas réellement m’être rendu dans certains endroits, ni même d’avoir effectivement connu certains de ces moments. Comme un éblouissement. J’ai laissé mes mains et mon œil faire, donnant aux photographies le goût étrange d’avoir survolé cette période comme dans un rêve. Pourtant les images sont là, plus nettes que mes pensées. Un soleil intense a éblouit d’un éclat vaporeux ma mémoire défaillante, comme l’animal pris dans les feux d’une voiture sur une petite route de campagne. Elle montre la recherche de tous les signes de la disparition du sentiment amoureux et du vide qu’il peut parfois laisser à sa place. L’effacement progressif de l’image du désir se transformant en simple souvenir. Les mots, les choses s’effaçant au profit de sensations que l’on ne peut matériellement montrer ou même expliquer avec des mots. Peut-être faut-il juste déjà essayer de les représenter simplement. Ce sentiment ne semble plus être présent et pourtant il est partout à la fois et c’est peut-être ce qui m’a poussé, sans vraiment le savoir, à appuyer sur le déclencheur. <img width="2957" The empty ballroom These photographs were taken during a trip to Sweden over the past December and January. The series tries to gather and emphasize all the symbols of the void often created by the disappearance of the feeling of love. It tries to catch the progressive desertion of the desire that once was at the center of life itself. All the words, all the things vanishing as they are traded off for pure and simple sensations which can’t be materially shown nor explained with words. Maybe it is worth trying to simply represent them. Un nombre conséquent de personnes visitent habituellement cette partie de la France pour y contempler les nombreux troupeaux de phoques qui pullulent sur les bancs de sable de la Baie de Somme. Allongés lascivement de tout leur long, ils digèrent en groupe et au soleil, les poissons gobés plus tôt dans la journée. Il est d’ailleurs assez curieux de constater que nous soyons à ce point toujours fascinés par l’observation d’animaux sauvages, quand bien même ces derniers ne feraient rien d’autre qu’une sieste interminable à 200 mètres de là. Comme si nous étions tous surpris de voir cette faune existante en dehors de nos écrans de téléphones portables. Étant exclusivement composées de vase et de gros galets inconfortables elle proposent un défi permanent pour le plus solide des marcheurs. Comme pour voir le premier éléphant de l’exposition universelle de 1900. Les enfants grimpent à plusieurs sur ce gigantesque bloc de béton en forme de pointe de flèche, avec la naïveté et l’émerveillement que l’on peut éprouver à découvrir de nouvelles technologies. Sans trop se méfier des conséquences à long terme sur l’humanité toute entière. Le temps, l’érosion opérée par la mer à cet endroit ont fait s’incliner, le bec dans le sable, les derniers vestiges du Mur de l’Atlantique. À la manière des populations enfin libérées du joug des dictateurs, qui font tomber les dernières représentations du pouvoir oppresseur à terre, dans une fête païenne et joyeuse. Ici c’est donc la nature qui à craché à la gueule de l’occupant. À ceci près qu’en France nous avons choisit de nous souvenir collectivement, pour ne pas oublier que tout cela n’est peut-être que cyclique et qu’il est toujours bon de rafraîchir les mémoires parfois courtes. Il y a celui qui semble maitriser l’espace dans lequel il évolue, il sait ou il va. Son trajet n’est que l’option la plus rapide entre son point de départ et celui de son arrivée. On le remarque à peine tant il maîtrise son geste certitude. Cet Homme là c’est l’autochtone. Le deuxième type d’Homme est indubitablement plus lent et semble indécis face au trajet qu’il a pourtant organisé par avance, mais qui semble comme soudainement choisi au hasard. Il a d’ailleurs tendance à parsemer son chemin de petits arrêts compulsifs et fréquents, son regard se perdant en hauteur à la recherche d’un repère ou d’un signe miraculeux qui confirmerait qu’il n’est finalement pas perdu. On parle ici du touriste, du type qui est pas du coin. Il se meut généralement en une foule compacte et massive, elle même composée de plus petits groupes ethniquement homogènes. Généralement reconnaissable à la grande diversité des couleurs qui composent son accoutrement il en dévient de fait identifiable au premier regard, permettant un isolement total du groupe face à la catégorie précédemment évoquée des populations locales. Lui et ses compères recouvrant toute la ville d’une couche colorée arc-en-ciel et monogrammée Vuitton. C’est cet individu, ou ce petit groupe d’individus, isolé de la masse qui nous intéresse ici, fragmentant ainsi le monolithe multi-ethnique qui remplit à ras bord les plus beaux endroits de Paris, où le parisien pur jus ne met décidément plus les pieds. Le potentiel photographique de cet enthousiasme à toute épreuve constitue donc une excuse pour redécouvrir des endroits de Paris connus de tous et qui n’ont certes pas ou peu changé depuis leur ville de pêcheurs. L’impression que toute la ville se réveille effectivement de concert le matin dans le but de taquiner le goujon, nous saisi dès que l’on pose le premier pied en dehors de la voiture qui nous y a amené. Attention au passage à ne pas vous faire voler votre portefeuille par un de ces goéland petite-frappe qui vous regarde de travers, une arrête de poisson au coin du bec. Car ici c’est un port bien sûr, et qui dit port, dit grosses populations de laridés guettant la moindre occasion pour vous piquer une frite de votre américain mayo (voire tout le sandwich d’un seul coup). À Dieppe il y a aussi cette jetée de 200m de long qui s’enfonce tout droit dans la mer, à l’extreme droite de la plage principale. Elle est remplie de pêcheurs à la ligne. Ils viennent là avec femmes et enfants et puis ils pêchent. Toute la journée. De l’autre côté, vraiment à l’opposé à l’extreme gauche, les familles aisées se reposent à l’écart. Chacun restant toujours bien réparti socialement sur la plage, le tout dans une ambiance toute normande mêlant, galets, falaises, monuments post deuxième guerre mondiale et de calvaires aux formes diverses. Avec un peu de chance on peut y croiser un poney qui broute à côté d’un terrain de tennis, un golfeur rose, des petites vieilles qui échangent des secrets, et des petits messieurs tout seuls. Concerning Dieppe, no need to dither about it, it’s a fisherman’s town. The whole city wakes up every morning for that purpose. Of course it’s a harbour city, but there’s also a 200-meter long pier which sinks down into the sea, on the right side of the main beach. It is filled with fishermen. They come here with their whole family and they fish throughout the day. With a little luck, you can stumble upon a pony grazing nearby a tennis court, a golfer wearing a pink outfit, grannies gossiping and lonely gentlemen.
